Activity sheets make for a happy Holly.

Woah. Oh man. I know some of you were expecting something “touristy” today, but it’s not gonna happen. I had a plan. Oh boy did I have a plan. I was going to come home after class and write about yesterday, then watch a movie. I’ve been sitting online for at least an hour and a half now answering emails, Facebook messages, and the odd blog comment here and there. If the stuff wasn’t important I wouldn’t have done it. Now I’m falling asleep at my desk. I really need to get up tomorrow for a walk (I’ve been very negligent, choosing much-needed sleep over fresh air and healthy exercise) which means I should go to bed. Now.

French class was pretty good today. We got more sheets to fill out (activity sheets). Some of it’s for homework, but I already did all of it – what was assigned and what wasn’t – during class. When it comes to talking I wouldn’t say I’m any further along then the rest. When it comes to writing freestyle, meh *shrug*. But when it comes to activity sheets – I’m a pro. Almost. These were easy. Madame Colette also had these pamphlets. She gave me and another women each one and said we were to pick something (a music group/event/etc) in it and present on it next class. She mentioned that everyone would be getting one so I don’t know if she’s only doing a couple of people each class or what. And when she handed me the last handout she said I could do something extra on it….was I the only one? I don’t know. At the end of class I told her about that French spelling CD Adeline showed me a while back and said if she was able to get access to a CD player maybe we could listen to some. She thought that was a great idea and said that I could present on that instead of picking something from the pamphlet if I wanted. I think with the pamphlet we’re just supposed to talk about what’s in it with the event we choose. But there’s not much there. I asked if we are supposed to research more and she said if we wanted we could so I don’t think the presentations are very long. I’m not sure exactly what she wants me to do with the spelling songs, so maybe I’ll prepare something for both (she said I could do that if I wanted) just to be safe. I have a whole week so I’ll think of something!

So I don’t know if she chose us two (Patricia is the other woman’s name and she’s originally from Amsterdam) first because of our level of ability or not. We were actually sitting at opposite ends of the room – her at the front on the right side, me at the back on the left so it wasn’t just convenience of picking two people side by side. In the end it doesn’t matter, I’m just a little curious is all.

Not much today except noise.

Sylvain decided this morning that he really didn’t want sleep. He woke everybody up earlier than normal. I managed to get our for a walk this morning so I had no idea until I got back. So there was that and today neither of the boys really got any sleep during nap time because of all the noise. Of course, the noise couldn’t be helped. It’s hard to be quiet when you’re ripping out a floor. Sylvain managed to get some sleep this morning on our walk and then when we got back to the house, but this afternoon I guess not so much. Bastien was a bit cranky this afternoon/evening because he was tired. He kept saying he didn’t want to sleep.

Hopefully they’ll sleep well tonight and not wake their parents up early! So other than trying to keep them occupied and trying to get them to sleep there wasn’t much else that went on today. Sylvain is getting more and more vocal all the time. It’s great, except for when he screams in your ear. Of course today there were more tears, but being tired will do that to you.

Baby giggles, little boy shrieks, and grown up guffaws.

This morning I took the boys on a walk. Bastien had played out side for a little bit before this so he was ready, but I still had to get some stuff together before we left. I managed to get Bastien to put his socks on because he had gone outside without them, just with his mini-crocs and the wind was nippy. So once we were all bundled up against the wind we set out. In the sun it got a bit warm, but then the wind would start-up again. Bastien looks so adorable in his little fleece jacket and hood. Sylvain fell asleep for the last 20 minutes or so, but woke up when I was bringing him into the house. It’s kind of hard not to while going up the front steps in a stroller. We saw a lone cow in a field and Bastien said she was sad because she was alone. I think she liked it that way; the look she gave us as we walked by… I wouldn’t want to get on her bad side, she was huge.

By the time we got back the upstairs had been cleaned so we could go play. I managed to keep them occupied until lunch time. Ok, they kept themselves occupied, but Bastien didn’t ask for a movie during this time. We went down for lunch and then he asked for a movie. Of course he had to have his nap first. During our play time Sylvain was very vocal. He’s becoming more talkative lately, which is good. And his tooth has broken through! He had a tooth now!! You can never see it though because when he opens his mouth his tongue is there (when he’s being fed) and when he opens his mouth to ‘talk’ I’m never close enough to see the tooth. And to try to get his to open his mouth to show you is actually quite challenging.

The boys actually slept for 3 hours today! It was great. I tried to watch a movie, but we’ve been having problems with the DVD player, or computer, or something. I ended up trying to take a nap myself. I sort of dozed a bit, but mostly just laid there. It was restful so that was good. Then was snack time and after that Bastien asked again for a movie. First we played a bit. We ended up watching Shark Tales, but without subtitles because it’s on the computer. Both Greg and Adeline got home while we were watching it. Sylvain likes to hit things. Including us. You want to hold him, but he’ll just climb all over you and hit you, mostly in the face.

We had pitas tonight for dinner, yum ^_^. And then Greg and Adeline taped off the tv room from the dining room. Oh yeah, I don’t think I’ve mentioned this yet. Well, you know how they’re a new floor in the toy room? Well, they’re also going to change the tiles in the dining room. The tiles right now are black. Because the room is in the middle and has no windows it’s dark and darker with the floor. Plus the black tiles show everything and with two kids, especially, all the crumbs show up big time. So they thought why not change it all at once? So of course things are pretty squished in the library and the tv room right now, but it’s not bad. We’re eating in the kitchen which has both its advantages and disadvantages, but it all works. I think the guys are coming back again tomorrow to continue. They had to wait for the concrete in the play room to dry before they can do anymore so they haven’t been here since last Wednesday.

That’s all for today!

Grand Promenade

Today made me think of history class. All the mud. Think WWI, Passendale and Ypres. If my research is right this village and city are in the West Flanders province in the north (Flemmish) part of Belgium. Let me back up a bit. This morning Adeline, Bastien, Sylvain, and I went for a walk. A long walk. Adeline has this booklet made of routes we could walk…some are from the house, others aren’t. They range from a couple of kilometers to several! The one we did today was about 3 I think? I’ll have to check with Adeline tomorrow, but I think it was between 2 and 3. We walked along back roads so there wasn’t much traffic (which was really nice, because at home I don’t really have that option – meaning they may be back roads, but they’re gravel so not as nice, and there’s more traffic). To make the trek shorter, we used this dirt (mud) road through 2 fields…a tractor road. It wasn’t bad walking in the center where there was grass, but as it was Bastien had to walk because I wouldn’t have been able to push the stroller with him in it! We got to this section that was all mud and we had to carry the strollers one at a time through it. This was part of what made me think of WWI. Kind of a downer, but really I was just in the mindset that I’m in a country that has so much more history than mine. Of course WWI wasn’t that long ago in the grand scheme of things, but still, in general Belgium has much more recorded history than Canada. I may not be a history buff (like some of my friends ^_^), but I still find it interesting on occasion :D.

It felt really good to be out walking. It wasn’t too cold while walking, but there was this chill wind that forced me to put my hood up even though I looked really silly. Then again, there was no one to see me! Also, by the time we neared the end of our journey (at the end of the mud road), we ran into a farm with donkeys. Bastien is quite  adept at imitating them. Then again, he’s good at making a lot of noises! I like his car, motorcycle, and bird noises (‘chirp, chirp’ ‘chirp, chirp’)

Today was also the day of French class #2. We talked more about the calendar and we talked about writing a C.V. (a résumé and I have to write one for next class). We also went through each month and what veggies and fruits were in season. The calendars she gave us were from a grocery store. Did you know there was such a thing as white asparagus? I didn’t. But my teacher said they are special to Belgium and you can only get them in May. Or something like that. But I guess you can get them in jars anywhere. I also was able to give 3 of my classmates a ride home. That way they could stay for the whole class and not have to take the bus!

Today is a good day to have a baby. Adeline’s brother and his wife, and friends of Adeline and Greg both had their babies today! That being said, I love babies. Even though Sylvain cries a lot, he is very adorable. He’s starting to make the cutest noises and you just know he’s having a conversation with you (if only we could speak their language…). Also, he’s playing around with facial expressions, and his smiles are very welcome. Basically, I feel like sunshine and rainbows when he coos and smiles. I know its super cheesy, but it’s true, you can’t help but feel amazing when a baby smiles at you!

Ta, ta for now.
